The final campaign to destroy Buku took place in early September 1772. A new military group was formed. The plan called for the following: the 173 Black Rangers would follow the same path as before when they found Buku while the second patrol would follow the Barbakoeba creek. This military force was commanded by Captain Jurriaan Francois Frederici (later to become GovGen of Suriname). The patrol reached Buku in three days fighting the Maroons along the way. They were joined by the Black Rangers at Buku. A fierce fire fight began followed by an overwhelming final attack on Buku. The Maroons could not hold the fort and the fight was over in half an hour. When the Dutch force entered what was left of Buku they found nine Maroons killed, while they captured inside the fort three other men, 23 women and 17 children. A large cache of weapons was found such as two cannons, two mortars, 20 rifles, machetes, 2 pistols, 2 shot guns and ammunition. The final fall and destruction of Buku dealt a serious setback for the Maroons and had lasting psychological consequences. BTW: The women and children were turned over to the authorities to return them to their plantation owners. ------
