On 7 July 1997, I posted ... So far, it has been difficult to obtain information about the 60 governor generals who ruled Suriname.
With thanks to Wim Hoogbergen, scholar and author of 'The Boni Maroon Wars in Suriname', I am able to update my list to 1873:
27 Feb 1816 British GovGen Pinson Bonham transfers power to Dutch GovGen
1816- July 1816 Willem Benjamin van Panhuys. He died in office.
1816-1822 Cornelis Reinhardt Vaillant acting GovGen.
1822-1828 Abraham de Veer. He resigned at own request.
1828-1831 Paulus Roelof Cantz'laar GovGen. he died in office.
........this was previously posted and is incorrect concerning the dates 1817-1821 GG Cornelis Rijnhard He rebuilt Paramaribo after the big fire.
? GG Smidt He planted mahogany trees what is now the Mahony Laan.
1854-? GG Jhr. van Sypesteyn He created a park near Fort Zeelandia.
? GG Baron van Heemstra
1828-1831 GG Paulus Roelof Cantzlaar- admiral He revised taxes pertaining to rent of houses. He was also GG of Curacao.
