{Membership} 1975 Suriname became a member of the UN 1977 Suriname became a member of the OAS {Dutch} Dutch became the official language when doing business with the colonial government by resolution 5 July 1688. (1) {Orphans} To increase the population of Zuriname (note spelling) with future colonizers, on 21 December 1690, 27 boys and 20 girls left the 'Aalmoezeniers Weeshuis' in Amsterdam for Suriname on the ship the "Princes Royaal'. A similar group of orphans was sent also to Cape Hope in South Africa. In 1692 an additional 60 boys and 25 girls left Holland for Suriname. (1) {Passports} As early as 1688, passports were required to leave Suriname. An applicant for a passport had to pick up 5 letters from the colonial secretary. Then deliver the letters to 5 churches/synagogue to obtain approval of the minister/rabbi of each church/synagogue in Paramaribo, Zandpunt, Commewijne, Perica and Joden Savanne. The proposed departure was read in church by the minister. These letters and approval were picked up 6 weeks later and brought back to the secretary of the colony before a passport was issued. (1) {Movie} In 1962 the movie 'The Spiral Road' was made in Suriname. It is based on the Dutch novel "Gods Geuzen' by Jan de Hartog. Rock Hudson played the role of Dr Anton Drager. The movie was directed by Robert Mulligan. A Universal Pictures production. In 1981, only a small cottage remained where the movie was made. {South Africa} Some family names which no longer exists in Suriname of families who came and then migrated to South Africa. Hoffmeyer, Van den Heever, Coetzee, Roux, Oudshoorn, Cellier, de Cheusses, du Plessis, Kruger, Pistorius, du Pree, Stein, Pasque de Chavannes, Erasmus. Some of them were French refugees.
