Subject: [History] Shades of Color (17-18th century definitions)
Article:
In the 17th and 18th century slaves were classified according to color:
[Mulattoes] ...offspring from a white man and black woman.
[Samboe] ...offspring from a mulatto man and black woman.
[Quadroon] ...ofspring from a white man and a mulatto woman.
[Maesti] ...offspring from a white man and a quadroon woman.
Note that the shade of color were the result of the union of a white male and a 'colored' slave female. Any white female and a black slave union would always result in the death of the black slave male.
