Subject: [History, Heritage] The Lebanese-Syrians
Article:
Around 1890 some 300 Lebanese-Syrians settled in Suriname. Their immigration went almost unnoticed. Most came from French Guiana and some from the British islands. Later on more Lebanese came as they were the relatives of those already in Suriname. These relatives lived around Tripoli and were all Christians. These immigrants became the shop owners, textile merchants. They lived secluded but assimilated well especially with the Roman Catholic Creoles. They adopted the western way of life style and did not show any signs of home sickness. During the post war years alone twelve Lebanese received a university degree and became prominent economists, engineers, lawyers, physicians and one of them Dr. A. Brahimhad a top executive management position at the Billiton(Shell) Bauxite Comapny.
