Peerke (Petrus) Donders. Born 27-10-1809 in Tilburg. Died in the leper colony Batavia, Suriname 14-1-1887.
He grew up in a poor family. He was admitted to Klein-Seminarie of St. Michielsgestel at age 22 as a knecht-student. He became a priest in 1841 and arrived one year later in Suriname. He worked among the slaves of Paramaribo. From there he went to work among the slaves on plantations and Indians and Maroons in the interior. He lived from 1860 in the leper colony Batavia. He was declared holy in 1982.
